How to maximize your planner

Updated: Jan 6

Not going to waste your time so let's get right into it. What are the best ways you can use your planner to your advantage?

  1. Buy a good planner

If you have a crappy planner, you're basically setting yourself up for failure. Plain and simple. Make sure you invest time in buying yourself a planner that has everything you need.

If you're not the type of person who writes to-do lists, you don't need a planner with pages of lines and checkboxes. If you're very simple when it comes to writing down tasks, you don't need a planner with stickers and quotes.

Places like Target have good planners that aren't gonna break the bank, but feel free to explore your options!

2. Use Different Colored Pens

A tip that really helped me when I was in college was color coding my classes. So if I'm writing down upcoming assignments for my biology class, I will always use a blue pen. And if I have a final coming up for English, I'll write it in a purple pen.

Utilizing different colors to categorize your classes is great because you subconsciously associate that color with that class. So it's easier to keep track of all your assignments, especially if you're taking 7-8 classes and you can't afford to confuse anything.

Pilot G2 Gel Ink Pens were my best friends when I was planning out my schedule.

3. Plan Out Everything Before The Semester Starts

The professor always says to "Read the syllabus" and it's a broken record at this point. But it actually is very helpful in scheduling your planner. I go to the section with all the due dates and make sure to write them all down in my planner.

Every single discussion board, project, assignment, exam. I plan it all out, not only in terms of the due dates but how much time I am going to spend on each assignment. If it's a discussion board, one day max. If it's an essay, I'll work on it the week before it's due, doing a little bit every day so I don't feel overwhelmed.

I really hope these tips help, I know they definitely helped me when I was in college because it gave me a clear and organized space that made things easier and less intimidating. Implement these tips and I'm sure they will make your college life easier!
